Side Channel Blower Price: What Actually Drives the Cost

Two quotes for "a 2.2 kW side channel blower" can differ by 60 % — and both can be correct. Here is what moves the number, so you can compare quotations on the same basis.

Why there is no list price

It is not a sales tactic. A 2.2 kW blower can be built a dozen legitimate ways, and the cost spread between the cheapest and the most expensive correct answer is two to three times.

Industrial blowers are configured, not stocked. The power rating is the starting point; what follows is motor efficiency class, phase and voltage, housing and impeller material, sealing, certification, and whether the unit ships bare or on a baseplate with filter, silencer and relief valve. Each of those choices is a real cost difference, and each is a real engineering difference.

So when you see two quotes for "a 2.2 kW side channel blower" that differ by 60 %, the useful question is not which supplier is cheaper — it is which two machines are being quoted. Ask for the curve and the bill of materials.

The six things that actually move the number

These are the cost drivers we adjust when a customer asks us to hit a budget. The figures are typical relative effects, not quotations.

Cost driverTypical effectWhat you get for it
Motor efficiency class+8–15 % for IE3 over a standard motorLower running cost; increasingly required for import into the EU and for tender compliance
Phase and voltage+10–25 % for a wide-voltage three-phase buildOne part number that works across 200–480 V markets; simpler spares holding
Housing and impeller material+15–80 % for cast iron or stainless over die-cast aluminiumCorrosion resistance, higher temperature capability, longer life in aggressive media
Certificationroughly 1.5–3× for ATEX / IECEx over standard CEDocumented explosion-proof construction for Zone 1 and Zone 2 duty — the certification itself is a large part of the cost
Sealing and special media+20–60 % for gas-tight or corrosive-gas buildsContainment and material compatibility for process gas, biogas, solvents
Quantity−15–40 % per unit from single piece to container loadSetup and freight amortised; the engineering content is identical

Treat these as ratios for planning, not as a price list. The only number that means anything is a quotation against your duty point.

Landed cost is not the FOB price

Buyers comparing offers from three countries routinely compare the wrong figure. The ex-works price is usually the smaller half of what the installation costs.

  • Freight and insurance — volumetric weight matters as much as mass once the unit is crated on a baseplate
  • Import duty and any certification or registration fees in the destination market
  • Commissioning spares: at least one set of filters and one belt or coupling element
  • Consumables for the first year, priced at the start so the operating budget is real
  • The cost of a spare unit or a service exchange if the process cannot stop
  • Currency and payment terms — the structure of the payment is part of the price

Lead time and minimum order quantity

Both move with configuration, and both are worth settling before you compare prices.

Standard aluminium builds in the common ratings ship fastest because housings and motors are held in production. Stainless, special voltages and certified ATEX builds carry the certification and material lead time on top. Magnetic levitation turbo machines are effectively project items.

On quantity: the step changes are at one unit, a pallet, and a full container. If you expect repeat orders, say so at the first enquiry — planning a run across two orders is usually cheaper than optimising each order separately.

How to compare two quotations fairly

A short checklist that turns an apple-to-orange comparison into a decision.

  • Are both curves drawn at the same voltage and frequency as your site supply?
  • Is the quoted power the shaft power at duty point, or the motor nameplate?
  • Does the price include filter, silencer, relief valve, baseplate and terminal box?
  • Which efficiency class is the motor, and is a test certificate supplied?
  • What is the warranty period, and what does it cover — parts, or parts and labour?
  • What is the documented lead time, and what happens if it slips?
  • Which payment terms, and in which currency?
  • Are the export documents included, or billed separately?

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a side channel blower cost?

There is no single figure, because the price is set by the configuration rather than the power rating alone. The same 2.2 kW machine can be built with a standard or an IE3 motor, single-phase or wide-voltage three-phase, an aluminium or stainless housing, and with or without ATEX certification — and those choices can multiply the cost by two to three times. Send your duty point and we will quote the configuration you actually need, usually within 24 hours.

Why do two quotes for the same power differ so much?

Almost always because the two machines are not the same machine. Motor efficiency class, voltage range, housing material, sealing and certification all differ. Ask both suppliers for the performance curve at your supply voltage and for the bill of materials; the difference usually becomes obvious immediately.

Is a cheaper blower more expensive to run?

Often, yes. A standard-efficiency motor costs less up front and more every hour it runs; over a normal service life the electricity dominates the purchase price. On continuous duty — aeration, conveying, drying lines — the efficiency class is usually the single highest-value decision on the quotation.

What is the minimum order quantity?

One unit for standard configurations. There is no minimum for a trial order, and we quote single units shipped by air or LCL. Quantity discounts are real but they start at pallet and container levels rather than at two or three pieces.

How long is the lead time?

Standard aluminium builds in common ratings are the fastest. Stainless, special-voltage and certified explosion-proof builds carry extra material and certification time. Tell us the date the equipment must be on site and we will tell you honestly whether the configuration you want can make it, or which change to the configuration would.

Do you supply the accessories?

Yes — inlet filters, silencers, relief valves, baseplates, flexible connectors and frequency inverters can all be supplied with the blower. Buying the accessories with the machine is usually cheaper than sourcing them locally, and it removes any argument about who is responsible if the installation does not perform.
